FAQs

What materials are your candles made from?

  • Our candles are crafted using either soy wax or coconut wax, known for their clean and sustainable qualities. Soy wax is used in our unscented pillar candles, as well as non-toxic dyes (we have undyed options as well). Coconut wax is used in our scented container candles. There are no dyes in these candles. We use phthalate-free and carcinogen-free fragrances. Both of these candles contain lead-free wicks.

Are your fragrances safe?

  • Yes, all our scented candles use phthalate-free and carcinogen-free fragrance oils to ensure a non-toxic environment.

Do your candles contain lead in the wicks?

  • No, our candles feature lead-free wicks for a safer and cleaner burn.

What is the difference between coconut wax and soy wax?

What are phthalates and why are they bad?

  • Phthalates (pronounced “THAL-ates”) are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break. They are found in a wide range of products, including:
- Cosmetics and personal care products (e.g., perfumes, nail polish, hair sprays, soaps, shampoos)
- Medical devices (e.g., tubing, fluid bags)
- Household items (e.g., detergents, adhesives, plastic plumbing pipes, vinyl flooring)
- Most candles
  • Despite their widespread use, phthalates have been linked to several health concerns. Research suggests that exposure to phthalates can lead to:

- Hormonal disruptions: Phthalates can interfere with the body’s endocrine system, potentially leading to reproductive issues and developmental problems.
- Respiratory issues: There is evidence linking phthalates to asthma and other respiratory conditions.
- Pregnancy complications: Exposure to phthalates during pregnancy has been associated with adverse outcomes for both the mother and the developing fetus.
- Reducing exposure to phthalates can be challenging due to their prevalence, but some steps you can take include buying phthalate-free candles, choosing phthalate-free products, avoiding plastic containers for food storage, and minimizing the use of personal care products containing phthalates.

What are carcinogens and why are they bad?

  • Carcinogens are substances, agents, or organisms that have the potential to cause cancer. They can be physical (like ultraviolet rays from the sun), chemical (such as asbestos), or biological (like certain viruses).
  • Carcinogens are harmful because they can damage the DNA in your cells. This damage can lead to mutations, which may cause cells to grow uncontrollably and form tumors. Not all exposure to carcinogens will result in cancer, but the risk increases with the amount and duration of exposure.
  • Candles, especially scented ones, can release potentially harmful substances when burned. Some candles, particularly those made from paraffin wax, can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like toluene and benzene, which are known carcinogens.
  • To minimize any potential risks, you can:
- Choose candles made from natural materials like coconut wax or soy wax.
- Ensure good ventilation when burning candles.
- Trim the wick to reduce soot production.
- Buy from transparent candle brands that focus on non-toxicity in their candles.
